Course overview

Starting from the definitions of heritage and of intercultural dialogue, the course is aimed at giving the basis for understanding the main concepts of the Life Beyond Tourism research which sees heritage as a tool to create important opportunities of intercultural dialogue. Furthermore, the course gives the tools to decline this opportunity into a challenge for the design process at the architectural and urban scale.

Life Beyond Tourism is a research created by the Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation and developed, since 2007, with the Foundation’s international network of experts. All the results of the research are published in books and scientific articles.

Life Beyond Tourism is recognized, among the many international institutions, by UNESCO, ICCROM and ICOMOS.

Structure of the course

The course is divided in 3 modules: the first, with two lectures, gives an introduction to the course with the conceptual scope and terminology. The second, also this made of two lectures, deals with the topic of the influence of tourism on a site with its risks and opportunities. Finally, the third is made of three lectures and explores the Life Beyond Tourism world from its beginnings to its milestones.

Along the course students will be asked to make simple researches, browsing on the internet, to find on their own new possible examples to create their own references.

Bibliography

Students can access to the Life Beyond Tourism bibliography on the Life Beyond Tourism portal.

Evaluation method

The evaluation will be a multiple answers questionnaire and students will receive a certificate of attendance and successful completion of the course.
